What is Creating Active Schools?

The Creating Active Schools (CAS) framework promotes a whole systems approach to school improvement and provides a structure for embedding physical activity at the heart of a school’s ethos.  The approach was piloted across the Yorkshire area in 2019 and was rolled out as a national pilot during the academic year 2021-22 across 17 Active Partnerships.

In Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin

Since December 2021, Energize have supported 18 schools as part of the pilot:

  • 12 primary schools in phase 1 (2021/22)
  • a further 5 primary schools and 1 secondary school in phase 2 (2022/23)

The pilot has helped schools to start embedding physical activity into their ethos and culture, by using the CAS framework to influence behaviour change.

The Impact

100% of schools reported pupil activity levels had increased

93% of schools reported pupil wellbeing had increased

73% of schools reported pupil behaviour had increased

80% of schools reported pupil social skills had improved

87% of schools reported movement and physical activity had become a daily habit and were embedded throughout school

Feedback from schools demonstrated that physical activity was a key factor in improving whole school outcomes - behaviour, wellbeing, focus and concentration in the classroom all improved.  Staff mindsets changed, confidence improved and 100% of schools reported that staff would advocate for physical activity and movement.
