More than Sport

...is a West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner funded diversionary project, that uses the power of sport and volunteering within the local sporting network to make a positive impact on the lives of young people aged 13-24 within Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin who are in, or at risk of being involved in, the Criminal Justice System.

More than Sport supports individual referrals through a journey that can:

  • increase their confidence, motivation, aspiration and self-esteem
  • improve their emotional and physical well-being
  • reduce their risk of entering the Criminal Justice System
  • help them re-integrate into their community
  • enable them to be ‘life ready’

More than Sport isn’t just about participating in sport itself.

It’s about providing young people with alternative volunteering opportunities within the local community network that match their interests. From construction or catering to grounds maintenance or media, all options can be explored.

A few quotes...

Participants

"Thanks to boxing I’m not doing the things I used to do, I’ve moved on from a darker time and my quality of life has improved. I get to meet new people; it gets me out and keeps me occupied."

"Introducing me to rugby has helped me get my anger out, got me outside more, given me self-confidence, helped me get fitter and given me something to look forward to."

Parents

"I’m so relieved to see some of my old Susie shining through again."

"I can’t thank you enough for the impact you have made not just on my son, but the family as a whole."

Partner Organisations

"The meaningful activities Nick has helped young people to access has supported their reduction in substance use, as well as opening up new social circles for them – some young people go on to achieve qualifications they never thought possible."

"Fantastic project which empowers vulnerable young people to make a positive difference to their lives."

"Nick is great at engaging vulnerable young people and working with them to find an activity which helps to divert them from potentially harmful lifestyles. He really gets the needs of the young people he supports and helps them overcome any obstacles which make accessing activities difficult."
