In 2019 the Shropshire and Telford United Women’s Association (STUWA) were given a small amount of funding from Telford Get Active and hosted a Ladies and Children’s Sports day on the field owned by Apley Park School.  The event was a success, with lots of ladies coming along to take part in archery sessions, egg and spoon race and a friendly game of rounders.

“Being outdoors and being active was so nice and everyone joined in and had fun” One of the ladies from the group had an idea of looking around and finding areas of interest that people could walk around.  Sister Anita went out and researched different areas looking at the nature and heritage and planned walks for the rest of the group and so the STUWA Walking Group was created.

Currently walks are held on Sunday and Thursday mornings, 10am until 11am and are in different locations including Apley Wood, Bowering Park and the Golf Links.  There are a total of 45 ladies signed up to the Walking Group.

Recently a member of the Ramblers Wellbeing Walking Group in Telford has come forward to lead a group on a walk from the local shop in Leegomery.

A member of STUWA said:

“It is so nice to see so many ladies going for a walk and talking and connecting with nature, we were in lockdown for so long during the pandemic, it is so nice to be able to get out in the fresh air”

The group would like to expand the walks to Arleston, Wellington, Lawley and Ketley Bank but need more ladies to come forward and join them.  The Ramblers Wellbeing Walking Group can offer free training to any lady who might be interested.

For any ladies interested in joining the group or would like to become a walk leader to take on one of the new walks, then please contact [email protected]
