With funding from Sport England, later this year we are running two Commonwealth Games celebration events on the 12th and 13th July for Primary and Secondary Schools.

We want to ensure we give a 'youth voice' to all all our planning for these events so we have linked with 6 Primary and 4 Secondary Schools across the County to get ideas from the pupils. We have worked with 86 children from student councils and sports leader groups from the following schools:

Primary

  • Trinity Primary School
  • Castlefields Primary School (pictured above)
  • Lilleshall Primary School
  • Longlands Primary School
  • St Lawrence Primary School
  • Wrockwardine Wood Primary School

Secondary

  • Shrewsbury Academy Secondary School
  • Church Stretton Secondary School
  • Burton Borough Secondary School
  • Lakelands Secondary School

From opening ceremonies to specific activities on the day, pupil councils and sports leaders have voiced their opinions on what they think will work well and inspire young people to have fun whilst being active.

"I feel that the celebration events are a great chance to bring people together to have fun trying new activities and sports"

We have concentrated on the Commonwealth Games Values and how we can embed these into our events with the support of the youth voice work we have done. As a reward, these pupils will all be coming along to the events as helpers to offer their support on the day and see some of their plans live in action!
